The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of a man wrongfully imprisoned, who never gives up hope through his long years behind the walls, and who finally breaks free and reclaims his freedom. What moves me most is not the escape itself, but the hope that carried him to that moment. The prison could hold his body, but it could not hold his belief in freedom. And that freedom in the rain, arms thrown wide, is the fruit this hope finally bore.

I chose to paint that moment in the rain, but I did not want to paint simply β€œhe got out.” I wanted the release that comes after breaking free of everything. I wanted him to feel less like a man who has gained his freedom and more like a bird that has finally taken flight. Behind him lies what once held him captive; before him lies the open sky and the rain. I wanted this image to become the shape of freedom itself, painted in my own way.
